We always talk about the beautiful home births, the empowering hospital births, and the triumphant VBACs. But what about the CBAC birthers? What about those that sought a vaginal birth after their prior c-section and ended up in another cesarean? How do we honor those birthers? How do we tell their stories?

One study surveyed women who had CBACs (Chigbu 2007) and asked them about their emotional responses to it. This survey indicated that CBAC mothers felt dashed expectations, feelings of inadequacy as a mother, and frustration with experiencing both labor and surgery. However, 92% of CBAC birthers ‘were pleased that they had attempted a vaginal birth’ (Cleary-Goldman, 2005).

Today, in honor of CBAC Awareness Month, I want to tell the story of a CBA2C mom. A mom that had her sights set on her goal and fought like hell to get there. And how in the end sometimes that 10% of unknown can still impact our outcomes. I want to highlight not how her birth ended, but how she labored, how she coped, and how our society doesn’t give her nearly the props she deserves for her badassery!

On July 11th I began texting and phone calls in the wee hours of the morning with a mom who’s water broke prematurely. Her body said it was go time, but her surges weren’t yet strong. We spoke on and off throughout the early morning hours about options and the importance of resting. Excitement was high as a vaginal birth after two prior cesareans was on the table for this sweet baby boy and his mama.

The next day as we continued to plan and strategize, the surges began to shift to a minor cramping. Early labor seemed to be progressing well and momma was in good spirits and motivated to get things moving. She was game for anything and everything in the book! With informed consent and decision making she made choices that felt right for her. This was such an empowering thing to see as her doula. Knowing that in VBACs choices and informed decision making are so powerful in how we see and process our birth experience!

I swear as births are about to begin my body knows. I am so in tune with birthing times that I prep meals, clean my home, rest early and nap, spend time with family, and even venture into the woods in this case. And then like clockwork the call comes out.

Late morning I received a call that birthing time likely had begun, We stayed in touch throughout the day by phone, text, and planned next steps together. You were prepared and knew your body. You trusted the process.

Later that evening we came together. You were still in the early parts of birth. You needed the reassurance, the balancing of the body, and the "doula effect" to move into the your active phase. Oh when doulas arrive... it means it's finally real. Birth has officially arrived and it time to meet your baby very soon.

You made great progress allowing your surges to grow in dimly lit rooms, removing distractions, and truly learning to lean in. Though with a VBAC leaning in is the hardest part isn't it? Trusting that you are enough. Prepared enough. Strong enough. That your body is enough. It is a whole mental game we play before we can met our babies. You played this game so well mama.

You leaned on your husband, moved intuitively with your body, and followed the wise words of your midwife as she reminded you to let go, sink in, and trust your body's signs of what to do next.

And it wasn't easy. It was hard work! You kept going. You kept going through back labor, vomiting, thoughts of defeat, and exhaustion. You kept going because you knew the moment you felt like you couldn't do it one more moment baby D would be in your arms.

As you rocked on the floor of your living room trying to seek the wisdom of your body, we watched silently. We watched you lean in. And just like that you were so ready. You surrendered and your body told us it was time for your son to be born.

One year ago today a baby bear was born into the ever ready arms of his wide eyed father. He was birthed by his fierce and determined mother with a force of will and strength.

Baby J you will always feel the strength of this day as it was how you came into the world. How you were molded and shaped by the power in the room.

Your mom and I met at a doula event one day and I loved her vibe immediately. I knew from our first fist bump that our team would be strong, our communication critical, and your birth beautiful in all ways.

Your parents and I worked tirelessly to plan for your special day. To prep for the things that could be controlled, and to do the work to accept the things outside of our hands. Your birth plan, our hands on practices, and lots of texts all left our little team ready for you. Grandma even came to meet you!

Your mama bear called me at 8:27am the morning of your birth. She told me her contractions were happening fast and furious and I headed to your home. No sooner did I zoom into the driveway did your mom know it was time to go. We got her into the car, created comfort for the ride, and headed down I-4 to Winnie Palmer. This is where your mom worked so hard, baby J. She worked tirelessly to meet you.

When we arrived there was excitement and tension. You were coming closer and closer to your big moment. Your mama and daddy were both there ready to meet you, baby J.

In triage your mom got onto my ball. She loved that ball and all the hip pressure. She focused in the dim light on releasing tension. On helping you down. She breathed you into the world and was so focused sweet boy.

When mama went upstairs to your birth place, she knew it was time to rest. I held her closely. I spoke strength and affirmation over her. I reminded her of the strength in surrender and the power of rest. And she was so strong in a moment of intensity, of mental and physical discomfort. Then she rested. We waited. Anyone that knows me knows I’m a #mother, a #doula, and a fierce advocate for birthing people. What you may not know is that I’m a leader of an organization that is 100% volunteer run. That organization is @icanbirth.

Why do I volunteer? Because #ICAN of Central Florida and it’s leaders, peer-to-peer support, and recommendations helped me not only recover both mentally and physically from a traumatic birth, but also to feel strong and confident going into what would turn into a #VBAC in one of the most VBAC restrictive states!

Today is #givingtuesday and it is a time of year we can pick something important to us to back financially. For me this is birthing rights of people. Those rights both in #cesarean and in vaginal births after one or multiple cesareans are my passion and why I became a birth worker.
